Course introduction

This unit introduces the course and its structure. In the course you will learn all about GDPR and how you can keep information safe in your place of work.

Why we need GDPR and Privacy Legislation

In this unit we talk about why GDPR is important and the role we all play in keeping data safe. There is a case study at the end which highlights the real cost of data breaches.

The Seven Principles of GDPR

We will run through the seven principles of GDPR. Think of this as the high level requirements of data protection - from which all the rights and responsibilities follow.

Lawful Bases and Consent

We will cover the six lawful bases for processing data, with particular focus on consent - one of the most misunderstood areas of GDPR. We will also look at the the special category data and the extra rules that apply for processing data.

Individual Rights

In this unit we will cover the eight legally enforcable rights individuals have over their personal data, what triggers each one, and what your organisation must do when a request arrives

Data in the Workplace

In this unit, we will bring GDPR into everyday working life, looking at where personal data flows through common work situations such as through email, HR, customer data, third party-sharing and even remote working. We will also cover how the principles and rights already covered apply in practice.

Breaches, Accountability and Your Role

In this final unit, we will cover what constitutes a personal data breach, the reporting obligations and timescales involved, the role of the Data Protection Officer, and your own personal responsibilities for keeping data safe
