Overview

This course gives a practical understanding of how to work through problems and make better decisions at work. It covers topics including why people rush to the first solution that comes to mind and why that so often fails; how to describe a problem clearly before trying to fix it; finding the real cause rather than treating the symptom; generating several options instead of acting on the first idea; choosing between options by setting your criteria honestly; making a decision when you are under pressure and do not have all the information; when to involve other people and how to get useful input from them; turning a decision into action rather than just a conversation; and reviewing what went wrong so you actually get better.

Candidates will undertake an online multiple-choice assessment and will receive a certificate if successful (any certificates from an official awarding body are sent to you via email).

Course Syllabus

  • Introduction

This introductory unit gives a complete overview of the course

  • Understanding the Problem

Before you can fix anything, you need to know what you are actually fixing. This unit looks at why people rush to solutions, how to describe a problem clearly, and how to separate what you know from what you are assuming.

  • Finding the Root Cause

The thing that you can see is rarely the thing causing the trouble. This unit covers how to look past the symptom to find what is actually driving the problem.

  • Generating Options

Once you understand the problem, you need more than one idea for fixing it. This unit covers how to come up with a range of options before deciding on anything.

  • Choosing Between Options

Having options is only useful if you can pick between them. This unit covers how to compare options honestly and make a considered choice.

  • Making Decisions Under Pressure

Real decisions often come with missing information and not much time. This unit covers how to decide well even when conditions are not ideal.

  • Solving Problems with Others

many problems need more than one person to solve. This unit covers when to involve others, how to get useful input, and the ways groups can get it wrong.

  • Putting the Solution into Action

A decision that nobody acts on is not a decision. This unit covers how to turn an agreed solution into something that actually happens.

  • Learning from What Goes Wrong

Decisions will sometimes turn out to be wrong. This unit covers how to respond well when that happens and how to learn from it properly.
